A direct sequel to the first episode of Matt Reeves’ The Batman, I think those who haven’t seen the latter will be a little lost. But I watched The Batman a while back, and this series did a wonderful job of quickly picking up where the movie left off without getting bogged down in a didactic recap.
The character may have nothing to do with the comic book version, but he’s interesting in his own right
It captures both the aesthetic and the gritty tone of the film nicely, though there are far more slyly lighthearted moments in the show than in the film. As in The Batman, Colin Farrell does an excellent job of portraying the Penguin as a stereotypical mobster "street kid": rude, profane, mercurial, and violent; but also knowledgeable, cunning, and able to read people.
But it’s off to a great start so far
I have my doubts about casting The Penguin as a teenage sidekick; and I don’t know if the Penguin’s antics will be enough to sustain an entire season.
